Traveling is no longer a luxury, it has become a lifestyle. Some people make traveling a hobby or a mandatory program for a community or organization. Even for some people, traveling is a job. However, there are still still some people who underestimate this hobby. They might assume, apa what is traveling for? is there any benefit?
If asked like that I will answer, ‘very much!’ After several trips, I have benefited a lot that I had never expected before;
1. Traveling is about interpreting togetherness
At that time I traveled to one of the beaches in the southern Malang area, Bantol Beach. I went with a student organization of nature lovers on campus.
My trip to Bantol Beach introduced me to the first time the meaning of a trip. The trip for three days and two nights on the beach really made me know each other personally - people who are caring, patient, indifferent, who look quiet but turned out to be very reliable, talented people become leaders, all seen on the trip that. People say, "if you want to get to know someone's true nature, take a trip with him". Opinion is true.
After getting to know each other there was no awkward feeling between us. In a short time we fused. Starting from laughter with friends traveling to laugh at the incident of sardine cans that exploded because of our silly behavior. Until the incident that made us slightly disagree with the case of division of tasks in the team. The trip was the first phase of the meaning of the journey I had taken. I found the meaning of being together with my traveling companions.
2. Traveling is a way, not a destination
Traveling has been called a lifestyle for some people. I interpret it in a different perspective. Lifestyle here has two meanings. Traveling as a trend or traveling as a place to forge yourself.
After my first trip to the previous point. I then climbed the mountain for the first time. I chose Gunung Penanggungan via Tretes located in Mojokerto district, East Java. An invitation from a friend who originally was not planned well in advance made me learn a lot. The lack of preparation made our team have to look for firewood and dry branches during the journey to the top of the mountain. We had to survive because the field stove that we brought was damaged and could not be used at all. Provision of knowledge that we previously gained from learning nature student organizations on campus, allows us to complete the climb for two days and one night.
The climb is the second phase of several trips I have taken. I mean as a place to forge myself, educate yourself, and train your own mental and character. The meaning of traveling at this point requires the intensity of traveling more often than just spending leisure time. Because every trip has a different complexity and context of the problem.
One of my traveling companions once said that in essence, we are not the same person after seeing the sun shine in the other hemisphere. The narrative becomes the whole conclusion at this point.
3. Traveling is a place to prove yourself
At this stage I experienced a slight setback in the meaning of the journey I was doing. After the second trip I did the two points above. I continued the journey and climb to a number of places that present the charm of the beautiful nature in various regions of East Java. Ranging from beaches, bays, waterfalls, lakes, and mountains such as Batu Beach and Teluk Hijau in Banyuwangi, Twin Falls in Mojokerto, Ranu Agung in Probolinggo and also Mount Panderman in Malang
At this stage I am more focused on the ambition to reach a destination somewhere or mountain top from my trip and climb. I hunt for exotic natural scenery in these places. Then I shared the results of the trip and the climb to social media as a form of self-verification, that I was able to reach those places or the top of the mountain that I was doing. I was increasingly obsessed and carried away with this ambition for a number of trips and mountain climbing that I did in a period of time.
4. Learning professionalism from traveling activities
In some people I find that traveling has become his identity. They left all their comfort zones to make a long journey that takes a long time. They quit the routine and even leave their jobs. Traveling becomes the main priority in their lives. However, I have not yet chosen this level. A number of trips that I took that I interpreted as a venue for self-verification led me to this stage. Traveling is a part of routine in between work and college activities.
Traveling has not been first but not the last in my life priorities. Traveling becomes the same priority as other activities such as work and college. I try to keep all three in the same balance. That choice automatically made me study professionalism.
Traveling is not a reason to disturb work and college time. There is no reason to skip work or skip college because you are tired after traveling the previous day. Vice versa, work and college are no reason to stop me from traveling.
5. Traveling Is An Event To Reflect And Find Yourself
How can traveling be a place to find yourself? One time, I once asked a fellow traveler about the meaning of traveling for him. Behind a trip to find new places, explore from one country to another, discover new cultures in a place visited. Basically traveling will lead to one point, which is how we can reflect. Doing introspection on ourselves, whatever we have done so far.
At one point when I arrived at the stage of learning the meaning of a professionalism from traveling. When traveling has become part of the routine in between other activities. The ascent of Mount Arjuno and Welirang which I managed to take in three days and two nights took me to the point when I had to look in the mirror. The ambition of achieving two mountain peaks at once in a short time actually led me to the saturation point. At that point I then do self-introspection. What have I done so far? What do I get with all those achievements? What can I give to others after the trip? New questions came to my mind to find those answers. Sometimes I have to be quiet for a moment to reflect. I'm looking for a new perspective in understanding a journey.
